When is the best time to plant in Texas?

Fall, when cool (less than 100°) weather sets in and the promise of rain is in the air. Perennials should be planted six weeks before the average first freeze date which is November 16-30 in the DFW area.
We all know how brutal our Texas summers are on our beloved plants, but we are blessed to have relatively mild winters. In October the soil is still warm and the nights are cool, promoting root growth, ideal for giving our plants a head start. With several months to establish a big healthy root system our plants will explode with new growth in the spring.
I know it seems strange to plant at this time of year when everything is about to go dormant, but give it a try and I promise your garden will reward you for your forethought, planning, and patience with a beautiful show in the spring.
